Candle Care Tips: How to Get the Most from Your JAL Candles

Why Candle Care Matters

A well-made candle deserves to be enjoyed to its fullest. With a little care, your JAL Candles — handcrafted in Cyprus — will burn cleaner, last longer, and fill your home with fragrance from the very first light to the last.

1. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 5mm (¼ inch). A trimmed wick produces a steady, clean flame and prevents mushrooming, soot, and uneven burning. Use a wick trimmer or small scissors for best results.

2. Allow a Full Melt Pool on the First Burn

The first burn is the most important. Let your candle burn long enough for the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the jar — this usually takes 2–3 hours. Skipping this step can cause "tunnelling", where the candle burns down the centre and wastes wax along the sides.

3. Keep Burns Between 2–4 Hours

Burning your candle for longer than 4 hours at a time can cause the wick to become too long, the wax to overheat, and the fragrance to diminish. Aim for 2–4 hour sessions for the best scent throw and longevity.

4. Keep Away from Draughts

Draughts cause uneven burning, flickering flames, and excess soot. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from open windows, fans, and air conditioning vents.

5. Stop Burning When 1cm of Wax Remains

Always leave at least 1cm of wax at the bottom of the jar. Burning a candle to the very end can overheat the container and damage the surface it sits on. Once you reach this point, it's time to repurpose or recycle the jar.

6. Store Your Candles Properly

Keep unused candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV light can fade the colour and weaken the fragrance over time. The lid (if included) helps protect the wax and preserve the scent between uses.
